Lesson 10: Tennis Double Strategies with Ryan Reidy

After reviewing my Mixed 7.0 Doubles Matchplay, Ryan explained the best strategies for me and my team.

Here is the video of my Zoom Lesson with Ryan on Doubles Strategies.

Here is a YouTube video of his Top 10 Doubles Strategies.

Tennis Doubles Strategy

General Rules of Thumb

  1. The baseliner hits the baseliner; the net player hits the net player
  2. The ball is magnetic; you should always be moving toward the ball
  3. Windshield wiper (cover the tennis court)
    • When your partner moves left, you move left, too (to cover more of the tennis court)
    • When your partner moves right, you move right too (to cover more of the tennis court)
  4. If you are moving backward to hit a shot (close to the baseline), always hit a lob. Do not try to hit a forehand or backhand shot.
  5. When lobbing, aim to hit a very high lob. The aim is not to hit over the net player's head but to make it a difficult shot to return as an overhead.
Game Situations
  1. Situation: High Lob
    1. When your partner runs to hit the lob, you yell "switch" and sprint to the baseline (diagonally) while watching where your partner hits the ball. As you turn around, you should be ready to respond.
  2. Situation: You Serve
    1. After the serve, remain at the baseline unless the ball is hit back short
  3. Situation: Partner Serves
    1. Stand in the center of the service box during the tennis serve.
    2. Watch the baseliner's return.
    3. If the baseliner hits the ball to you, volley the ball  at the net player (unless it's a low ball)
    4. If the baseliner hits the ball to your partner, move back to the service line (to prepare for the net player's return volley). Watch the net player closely to see what he does.
      1. If the net player plans to volley, move back further (to give yourself more time)
      2. Otherwise, return to the center of the service box
  4. Situation: You Receive
    1. Hit back to the baseliner cross-court
  5. Situation: Your Partner Receives
    1. Stand on the service line, closer to the center line
    2. Watch the opposing net player:
      1. If the net player is planning to hit the shot, move back
      2. If the net player is not hitting the shot, move forward to the center of the service box
