How does health insurance work in London, England?

Nicole Pepin       01:18 PM
Private answer
You can find information about health insurance in London at https://nuin.northeastern.edu/destinations/england/health-safety/

Anonymous Attendee       01:25 PM
Do students with a U.S. passport need to obtain a visa for NUin?

Kate Berge       01:29 PM
https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa is the best place to check to see if you need a visa. Generally speaking, U.S. citizens will not need a visa - but I recommend using this tool and checking with your local consulate if you want to double-check, as we are not visa experts.

What happens during the first week at N.U.London? Is there a preset plan, or can the student do whatever he wants?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:29 PM
We had orientation activities during the first week, which helped us understand the city, things around our accommodation and the location of classes. It is a mix of programming run by the N.U.in team and time to explore with friends.

All N.U.in England, students participate in on-location orientation once they arrive in London. This orientation will introduce you to your new neighborhood and the services available at the New College of the Humanities, review academic policies and expectations, and build community among the group. You will engage in sessions about their residence halls, communication in England, and academics.

Anonymous Attendee       01:28 PM
Can you compare the academic rigor to that of N.U.?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:32 PM
I found it similar in terms of intensity.

Anonymous Attendee       01:30 PM
Are we allowed to do things in the program unrelated to the N.U.? For example, are we allowed to leave campus on the weekends?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:30 PM
Yes, for sure. The city is your oyster in every way!

Anonymous Attendee       01:33 PM
Did any of you go outside London for a weekend to Paris or something along those lines?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:35 PM
Yes! We did travel a lot. But you must plan to travel around classes and assignments because it gets intense sometimes to juggle travel and academic assignments.

Anonymous Attendee       01:34 PM
How are roommates assigned? What if they don’t get along?

Anonymous Attendee       01:35 PM
Are the residences close to the classrooms? Will they need to figure out transportation for classes?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:36 PM
Yes, it is close! Roughly a 20-minute walk from the residence.

Anonymous Attendee       01:35 PM
Does Nu.In.Does England follow English holidays?

Carla Rodriguez       01:36 PM
Private answer
Yes, the program follows local holidays.

Anonymous Attendee       01:36 PM
How cold/rainy does England get during the fall?

Anonymous Attendee       01:37 PM
What, if anything, could you do differently?

Anonymous Attendee       01:38 PM
How will I get cellphone usage in London?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:38 PM
You can get a local number when you arrive in London.

Anonymous Attendee       01:39 PM
Do you need to bring sheets and towels?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:40 PM
You can! But a lot of us just bought them locally in London.

Anonymous Attendee       01:39 PM
What is the weather like from Sept-Dec?  Do you need a heavy winter coat/jacket?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:43 PM
You need a heavy jacket/coat because it does get cold towards the end. Ideally, something water-resistant because it rains frequently and unexpectedly in London.

Simona Ruderman       01:39 PM
How much (or how little) should our students bring? Two suitcases worth? More or less?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:42 PM
Two suitcases should be more than enough!

Anonymous Attendee       01:42 PM
Did staff help orient you on how to use the tube? During orientation week?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:44 PM
Yes! For the first week, the I.C. would go to class with us on the tube in the morning,  which was a very helpful tube. Orientation gives multiple opportunities to get accustomed to the tube.

Anneliese Abdella       01:43 PM
Are there any good gluten-free food options near campus?

Vaaridhi Bagrodia       01:45 PM
Gluten-free options are all over London. London is super friendly for gluten-free eating. I didn’t find a single restaurant or cafe without a few options.
