Review: Bentley III Outdoor Fire Table by OVE

To dine on the patio and enjoy a bit of light and heat on colder days, we purchased the Bentley III Outdoor Fire Table by OVE from Costco. It had excellent reviews and was on sale for $599.

The Fire Pit arrived in a large cardboard box but was not very heavy. It was already assembled, so it was easy to install. I added the glass beads and inserted the 1 AAA battery for the lighter.

It came with a fire pit cover and a Natural Gas conversion kit. So far, it's working well.

Lesson 09: Tennis Serve Lesson & Strategy with Ryan Reidy

As I struggled with my consistency and power on my serve, Ryan Reidy from 2minutetennis evaluated my serve (using Zoom) and offered excellent pointers for improvement.

 Strategy Video:

 Zoom Video with Ryan

Serve Video (Side View)

Serve Video (Rear View)

Serve Placement Strategy

  1. In doubles, serve 80% of the time from the corner of the singles alley, 10% from mid-center, and 10% from the doubles alley.
  2. In singles, serve 80% of the time from the corner

Serve Technique

  1. Keep the head still even after serving; do not look where the ball is going!
  2. Serve the ball more in front to get more power and a better angle
  3. Use the left hand for an extra 5-10% of power
  4. Beware of the foot fault

Singles Strategy

  1. Return serve back up the middle (become more consistent on returns)
  2. Vary the height of your shot over the net - not speed
    • Hit low        = when closest to the net
    • hit medium = when mid-court
    • Hit high       = when at baseline
  3. Hit more forehands (run around backhand)

Doubles Strategy

  1. Hit the ball to players in the same position as you (baseliner to baseliner, net player to net player)
    • Exception: On low volleys, hit to the baseliner
  2. When hitting an overhead, hit the opponent closest (take time away from your opponent)
  3. When you lob your opponent, move back to the service line (move toes to the service line)

Bryant HVAC Upgrade

My home's 30-year-old York furnace and air-conditioner were getting old and working ineffectively at cooling the house.

After consulting with David Pogosian and Conrad (two highly regarded contractors), I decided to upgrade my system using the following components:

I connected the Nest Thermostat to Alexa to control the thermostat with voice commands.

On Thursday, June 23, we noticed our air-conditioner was not working well. We contacted David, and he discovered a leak. All of the cooling fluid was gone! He proceeded to work on a repair.

After fixing the leak, the A/C is working much better. Today, on June 24, it was over 90F outside, but our home was at a comfortable 71-74 F.

Father's Day Dinner at Naschmarkt

For Father's Day on June 19, 2022, Inna made dinner reservations at Naschmarkt in Campbell, CA. Naschmarkt is one of my favorite Austrian restaurants, and I was pleased to dine there again.

Inna drove me there in the Tesla Model Y, parking at the First Street Parking Garage on 168 S First Street,

After arriving for our 19:30 dinner, we sat outside and ordered the following items from the menu:

  • Appetizer: Homemade Pretzel with double-smoked bacon, beer-cheese sauce
  • Boris: Hungarian Beef Goulash, Belgian Beer
  • Inna: Halibut
  • Dessert: Schoko Kuchen

I really enjoyed my Hungarian Beef Goulash. It was exquisitely prepared and very scrumptious!

Inna's Halibut was also quite delicious but not as good as the Weiner Schnitzel.

Inna and I really enjoyed our dinner.

The Schoko Kuchen dessert was so delicious!

Windsurfing at Coyote Point

It's been almost 9 months since I last windsurfed, and I was eager to return to the water. When a strong wind was forecast by iWindsurf.com on Saturday, June 18, I was excited to resume my favorite sport.

I arrived at Coyote Point, San Mateo, at about 2:10pm. After paying the $6.00 park entry fee, I parked my Toyota Sienna minivan near a grassy land strip near the windsurfing launch point.

I wanted to know the size of the sail to rig. The forecast called for 18-24 knots of wind, but actual wind varied from 14-17. I decided to use a more giant sail to ensure adequate power. I rigged an Ezzy Elite 5.7m sail on an Ezzy 430/400 mast. I used my Fanatic 105 STB with a long fin.

When I got on the water at 3:00pm, there were many wing dingers on the water. In fact, it looked like windsurfing was dying, as only 1-2 other windsurfers were remaining. Everyone else was either wing foiling or windsurf foiling.

As I started sailing, I had to adjust to the gustiness of the wind. It was dead one second, and in another, it was blasting 25 knots. I finally got planing on my STB and had a nice long ride. On the way back, I had difficulty water-starting as the wind was gusty. Eventually, I got going quite well.

It was a great start to the season. I sailed for about 90 minutes total and was really tired afterward.

Review: Pyle Outdoor Patio Speakers

After staying in Arnold, where we enjoyed listening to music on the patio (with the installed Bluetooth Patio Speakers), we decided it would be a great idea to do so in our home.

I researched many available options on wirecutter.com and finally decided on the following possibilities:

I decided to try the Pyle PDWR64BTB due to the favorable reviews on Amazon.com and the relatively low price. I wanted a simple solution without having to bother with a separate waterproof 2-channel power amp like the Pyle Marine Bluetooth Amplifier.

I also ordered the following accessories to mount the Pyle Speakers in my backyard:

Since the speakers are mounted on our wooden fence, about 20 feet apart in my backyard, 20 feet of speaker wire are required (in addition to a speaker wire to the RCA converter). The Kasa Smart Plug turns the Pyle speaker on/off (so it's not always on).

 Pyle Outdoor Speaker Review

Highlights

  • Pyle's Bluetooth connects quickly and has an excellent range
  • For two 6.5-inch speakers, the price is quite reasonable
  • Sounds decent

Lowlights

  • When connecting to Bluetooth, it makes an annoying chirp
  • At max power, I hear distortion coming out of the speaker
  • Even though it's rated at 400W, the speaker sounds like 40W
  • Instead of a standard speaker connection, Pyle requires the use of an RCA to-speaker adapter

A Weekend in Arnold

To explore Arnold's beautiful lakes and trails nearby, Inna reserved a charming Mountain Cottage in Blue Lake Springs (using Airbnb). The cottage is located at 1709 Manzanita Drive, Arnold.

Initially, we planned to rent a kayak, but the nearby shop charged about $80/day and required a roof rack to transport the kayak. We decided to order the Explorer k2 Kayak Inflatable Kayak from Amazon.com for $140. It would pay for itself in 2 or more sessions.

We planned to drive on our Tesla Model Y to minimize unnecessary fuel costs, given the high price of gasoline ($7.00/gallon).

Friday, June 10, 2022

In the morning, I woke up and remembered forgetting to charge the Tesla’s battery. I plugged it in immediately, setting it to charge to 90% capacity (it would take 5 hours on our 24A charger).

I showered and went for a stroll around the neighborhood. As the weather promised to be very hot, I decided to skip the tennis ball machine workout (as I played the day before) and use Adobe Lightroom to correct my numerous photos from our recent trip to Boston.

At around 3:00pm, Inna freed up from her work, and we drove to Arnold. This was our first long trip on the Tesla Model Y. I needed some time to get used to driving it. Unlike most cars, the regenerative braking works very well, and I must mostly use the accelerator pedal to accelerate and brake.

The drive to Arnold should typically take about 2.5 hours, but it took us close to 4 hours due to heavy traffic. My Tesla was charged 95% before we left. While on the way to Arnold, we decided to stop by the Tesla Supercharger in Copperopolis (a tiny little village).

When we arrived at 6:05pm, our Tesla Model Y had 49% battery left. I connected it to the Model Y (it was pretty easy), and it started charging immediately. While setting the Tesla, Inna and I played some games (Driving, Tic-Tac-Toe, and Chess). The cost to charge went from 49% to 80% and was $11.75. After 15 minutes, we drove to Arnold, stopping at Dogwood Italian Restaurant for dinner.

We were seated outside after parking our Tesla Model Y nearby and checking in. We looked at the menu and ordered the following:

  • Inna: Pear Salad, Ribeye (half-portion), Hot Tea
  • Boris: Pear Salad, Ribeye (half-portion), Hot Tea, Lemonade
  • Dessert: Cassis Cobbler
Inna and I enjoyed the Ribeyee, and the Pear Salad was decent. I really liked the Cobbler with Cassis. Overall, it was an average-quality dinner. Since it was getting dark, I hurried to check into our Airbnb rental.

Although nearby, the road to 1709 Manzanita Drive was twisty, narrow, and complicated. It was challenging to find the correct address in the dark. Tesla’s GPS was inaccurate, and I relied more on Google Maps on my iPhone.

When we finally identified the correct house, I drove up the steep driveway and parked the Tesla. I unloaded our suitcases from Tesla’s trunk, and we walked toward the house.

Immediately, we ran into a few problems. According to the owner’s instructions, we needed to enter a 4-digit code on the door. A lockbox was near the door, and we thought this was what was meant to be opened. We entered the combo, but it would not open.

We contacted the owner but could not call her, as Google Fi had no reception there. Eventually, I could join the Mountain Hideaway WiFi network so that Inna could send messages to the owner (using both Airbnb and SMS).

While we waited for the owner to respond, Inna explored the house further. She discovered another door, which also had a keypad. We decided to try it and heard whirring sounds, but the lock did not open. After trying the lock a few more times, we managed to open the lock.

Once inside the house, we unloaded our suitcases and opened the door onto the patio. The patio had a two-speaker Bluetooth speaker (on which we could play music). In addition, there was covered-up patio furniture, whose covers we removed. We cleaned the main table and sat down for a game of Scrabble. Inna and I played while listening to Jack Johnson’s playlist.

I lit a Citronella candle to keep the bugs away, and we played Scrabble until midnight. Inna won!

Saturday, June 11, 2022

In such peace and quiet, we slept pretty soundly. I woke up at around 8:15am, as my iPhone alarm started playing. I dressed, showered, and shaved. Inna woke up, too, and we decided to skip breakfast and head to Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

I tried to connect my work’s Dell Laptop to the Mountain Hideaway WiFi network in our Airbnb, but it would not accept. I was unsure why, as my iPhone and iPad connected quickly, and Inna’s MacBook Air connected perfectly well.

The Google Fi phone connectivity issue turned out to be unfixable. Although I contacted customer service, the steps suggested were useless because Google Fi has no coverage in Arnold. In addition, since Google Fi does not currently support WiFi calling on the iPhone (although it does keep it on Android devices), calling someone in Arnold is difficult. Perhaps using Skype would work.

After a 10-minute drive, we paid our $10 entrance fee and parked in the parking lot. We decided to hike the accessible 1.7-mile Calaveras North Grove Trail.

While heading toward the trail, we saw a lot of hikers gathering and sitting down before a small stage. One of the guides explained that there would be a show of wild animals. Inna and I decided to stay and see what fascinating wild animals would be shown.

The State Park’s animal was amusing and educational, while introduced the following animals:
  • Young Kangaroo “Joey” named Clover
  • Screeching Owl named Boo
  • Kinkajou (Related to raccoons)
  • Red-tailed Hawk named Tony
  • California rattlesnake
  • Grey Fox
  • Costa Rican Capuchin Monkey named Darwin
We enjoyed the animal show and thought it was funny and educational. All of the animals were either illegally purchased or hurt in the wild. The owl was hit by a truck and can no longer fly very well. The rattlesnake was hit by a weed-wacker.

Once the shows finished at 11:00am, we resumed our hike along the Calaveras North Grove Trail. While on the trail, for a short time, we decided to try hiking the Grover Overlook trail. As we walked upwards, hoping for a better view, we thought we were missing the park's main highlights. We decided to turn around and follow the original Calaveras North Grove Trail (which was the correct decision).

We saw many beautiful, tall, and wide Sequoias on the North Grove Trail. There were so many beautiful, gigantic trees all around.

For some reason, I was exhausted (perhaps because of the higher elevation), so I took advantage of sitting on the multiple benches spread out on the trail.

When we finished the trail, we were a bit tired and hungry. We decided to eat lunch at the nearby Bistro Espresso. After a short drive, I parked nearby and ordered the following items:
  • Boris: Caprese Chicken Sandwich with Cole Slaw, Mocha with Pistachio
  • Inna: Caprese Chicken with Garlic Fries, Latte, Ginger Lemonade, Muffin
Although the people were amiable, I did not enjoy the food or the drinks at Bistro Espresso. I thought that my mocha was too sweet (and not well-made). My Caprese Chicken Sandwich was quite bland. Inna’s Ginger Lemonade was too sweet too. The muffin tasted like it came out of Safeway.

After lunch, we decided to check out White Pines Lake. After parking our car, we saw many people kayaking and paddle boarding on the lake. There were a lot of people barbecuing and enjoying themselves. We also heard karaoke music and some people attempting to sing along.

Tired, we decided to grab the chairs from our car and sit by the lake, resting and enjoying nature. We had some laughs watching you girls paddle boarding and falling off.

At around 5:35pm, we decided to check out the nearby beach, which was much busier. Afterward, we drove to Sarafina’s Italian Kitchen. We hoped to get in (without making reservations), as our phones were not working in Arnold.

We were lucky and were seated right away. After looking at the menu, we ordered the following:
  • Appetizer: Heirloom  Caprese Salad
  • Boris: Seafood Pasta Special, Dust Bowl Pale Ale, Hot Tea
  • Inna: Veal with mashed potatoes, Glass of Local Wine, Hot Tea
  • Dessert: Italian Lemon Cake
I liked my Seafood Pasta Special. It was full of shrimp, octopus, salmon, and fettuccini. I also wanted my Pale Ale beer. Inna’s Veal was delicious. For dessert, the Italian Lemon Cake was genuinely excellent. We enjoyed our dinner at Sarafina.

After dinner, we returned to our Airbnb cabin. Inna swung on the swing, and we sat on the patio, enjoying music and being outside.

Sunday, June 12, 2022

During the night, Inna did not sleep well, so I let her sleep longer before getting up.  At about 8:30am, I decided to shower and dress. While Inna woke up, I ate the leftover seafood fettuccine on the patio with background music.

Inna decided to wake up at around 9:30am. After getting dressed, we discussed our options. We had the following options:

Since it started to rain off and on, we decided to relax in the cabin, where I continued to read One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General.

At about 12:30, we were told that a cleaner was headed to our cabin, so we quickly checked out and decided to stop by nearby Murphy for lunch. We chose Rob's Place and ordered the following appetizers (as main entrees would require more than 30 minutes):
  • Artichoke Bake
  • Apple Turnover
  • Tempura Avocado
  • Coffee
  • Hot Tea
We liked our appetizers and enjoyed Murphy's warmer weather. I really liked the Tempura Avocado.

After lunch, we resumed our drive home, with a quick stop in Dublin to supercharge the Tesla (as we arrived with only 14% battery remaining). After 15 minutes of charging, we drove home, coming during a summer shower! The cost to supercharge my Tesla from 14% to 30% was about $8.

First Day of Surfing at the Hook

I had a free day at work and decided to surf in Capitola. Although Surfline did not report favorable conditions, I wanted to return to surfing this season.

The 40-minute drive from South San Jose to Capitola was smooth, and I arrived at the Hook Parking lot around noon. I parked and put on my wetsuit, booties, and a cheap watch. I waxed my Wavestorm 7' board and attached a leash, heading out to surf.

The waves were 2-3 feet with low tide. There were not too many surfers out, and I paddled to position myself to catch some of the waves. There were very few breaking waves, but I saw one good ride.

It was nice to be back on the ocean, though there was a lot of kelp.

Lesson 08: Forehand Tennis Lesson with Ryan Reidy

After returning from Boston (where I did not play tennis for May), I resumed my tennis practice at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC).

Playing on the club's ball machine, I noticed that my forehand and backhand techniques have deteriorated, and I need additional help to improve them. I scheduled a video lesson with Ryan Reidy (2minutetennis.com) for June 8, 2022, at 18:00.

I used the following video for Ryan's review:

Forehand Side View

 Forehand Rear View:

Ryan's Forehand Pointers

  1. During the preparation part of the swing, the right arm should be closed (like the arm and the racket are one)
  2. The Left arm finishes high as if hitting the wall and stops there
  3. The Right arm should finish way above the head and behind one's head (see Nadal video)

Ryan's Backhand Pointers

  1. The backhand should be closed more
  2. When the backhand is initiated, the knees should bend
  3. When swinging at the ball, use your legs to generate power against the ground
  4. Finish with the racket hitting one's back

Lunch at Teleferic

After returning from a ball-machine session at AVAC, Inna and I decided to return to Los Gatos and visit our favorite local patisserie, Fleur de Cocoa. Inna agreed to drive her new Tesla Model Y, and I enjoyed the smooth, quiet ride.

When we arrived, it was pretty busy (with all the inside tables full). We also noticed that most outdoor tables have also been removed. We decided to try eating somewhere else, perhaps at Epernay Bistro, but Inna had an idea to try the newly opened Spanish restaurant nearby.

After walking over to Teleferic Barcelona, we asked to be seated outdoors and were sitting at a lovely table in the shade. Our waiter, Julio, brought out the menus, and we soon ordered the following items:

  • Inna: Sangria Teleferic
  • Soup: Gazpacho Porron
  • Tapas: Chicken Empanadas, Crab Croquetas

Inna loved her Sangria Teleferic. It was much better than most sangrias in the U.S. and close to the sangria we tasted in Seville's El Pinton. The  Gazpacho Porron was excellent, too, and Inna and I shared it. Next came the tapas; we loved the Chicken Empanadas and Crab Croquetas.

Overall, we had a lovely lunch and hope to return to Teleferic Barcelona soon.

Last Days in Boston

Monday, May 30, 2022

We returned to Cambridge from The Berkshires at about 6:30pm. I parked the car on Harvard Street, and we unloaded our backpacks. I started to sneeze, as Boston had a very high pollen count.

At 7:10pm, Mounisha (our Turo host) arrived to pick up her Honda Civic. I handed off the keys, and Inna and I walked to the nearby Tatte Bakery for our small dinner. The bakery closed at 8:00pm, so we hurried to place our order. I ordered a Chicken Salad sandwich, while Inna selected a Lamb entree with a few small tea cakes for dessert.

When Tatte Bakery was closing, we returned to our apartment, and each took a shower. We were a bit tired and drank some hot tea. The allergies bothered me a lot, and I was sneezing incessantly.

Tuesday, May 31, 2022

In the morning, we woke a bit later (due to being tired from our previous day's trip to the Berkshires. I had a very annoying allergy attack going on most of the day. I avoided spending too much time outdoors, where the pollen would be even more potent.

When Inna woke around 9:30am, she dressed, and we walked to our nearby Tatte Bakery for breakfast. We ordered the following breakfast items:

  • Boris: Matcha Latte, Croissant Breakfast Sandwich, Roasted Strawberry Tea Cake
  • Inna: Latte, Croque Madame, Roasted Tea Cake

We really enjoyed our sandwiches! The Croissant Breakfast Sandwich was delicious as usual. Unlike most days, Tatte was not overly busy (probably because all the Harvard students had already graduated or departed for the summer).

As I had a lot of meetings, I returned to our 334 Harvard Street Apartment earlier while Inna stayed at Tatte for another half hour.

Inna and I worked most of the day. During the afternoon, our apartment's water was shut off due to some repairs being done, and we could not make any hot tea. Eventually, all of the water was turned back on.

In the evening, for our last dinner in Boston, Inna, Alex, and I decided to eat at Eataly's La Pasta restaurant. Inna made reservations for 7:30pm, and we boarded a Lyft Lexus RX350 to the restaurant. We met up with Alex and sat down for our dinner, ordering the following items:

  • Appetizer: Burrata & Fruita
  • Alex: Niasca Limonata, Marghertita Verace Pizza, Affogato
  • Boris: Lasagna Emilliana, Hot Tea
  • Inna: Capriciosa Pizza, Hot Tea, Affogato

We really enjoyed our dinner, and I liked my Lasagna. Inna's Capiciosa was also quite delicious! For desserts, we shared two Affogatos, which were also delicious.

It was our last dinner in Boston, and we were sad to say goodbye to Alex, who still had 3 remaining weeks of the Summer I session at Northeastern to complete before flying back to San Jose.

He will be taking Summer II session classes remotely from San Jose.

We took a Lyft car home to our apartment and made hot tea with the last remnants of our Russian cake.

Wednesday, June 1, 2022

I woke at around 7:37am in the morning, showered, shaved, and dressed. I opened the hamper to prepare to do laundry and purchased $5.00 worth of washing machine time (2 loads).

During the night, Inna did not sleep well due to the heat & humidity, and I turned on the air-conditioning, which seemed to help.

We planned to pack all of our suitcases and prepare for our flight from Boston to San Francisco on JetBlue #633 at 6:05pm EST (arriving in SFO at 10:00pm PST).

In the late morning, Inna and I went for our last stroll along the Charles River, noticing the calm water and the absence of students. Usually, many people are jogging along the river, but with the end of the spring semester, Cambridge was a little more empty.

After our walk, we stopped at our favorite Tatte Bakery (which was not busy at all). We ordered the following items:

  • Boris: Mocha, Smoked Salmon, Avocado & Egg Sandwich
  • Inna: Latte, Smoked Salmon, Avocado & Egg Sandwich

After a delicious breakfast, I returned to our apartment to unload the dryer. I decided to do laundry on the last day, so we replaced all our clothes cleanly.

We still had some cleaning to do in our apartment, including emptying all the trash and cleaning our dishes.

We ordered a Lyft at 3:40pm, but the driver arrived at about 3:50pm due to traffic. We loaded our suitcases and were taken to Boston's Logan Airport. Once through security, we ordered a few sandwiches and ate them before boarding the plane.

I read most of Mark Browder's Red Notice on the flight back to San Francisco. Here is a short summary:

November 2009. An emaciated young lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, is led to a freezing isolation cell in a Moscow prison, handcuffed to a bed rail, and beaten to death by eight police officers. His crime? To testify against the Russian Interior Ministry officials who were involved in a conspiracy to steal $230 million of taxes paid to the state by one of the world's most successful hedge funds. Magnitsky's brutal killing has remained uninvestigated and unpunished to this day. His farcical posthumous show-trial brought Putin's regime to a new low in the eyes of the international community.

Red Notice is a searing expose of the wholesale whitewash by Russian authorities of Magnitsky's imprisonment and murder, slicing deep into the shadowy heart of the Kremlin to uncover its sordid truths. Bill Browder - the hedge fund manager who employed Magnitsky - takes us on his explosive journey from the heady world of finance in New York and London in the 1990s, through his battles with ruthless oligarchs in the turbulent landscape of post-Soviet Union Moscow, to his expulsion from Russia on Putin's orders. Browder's graphic portrait of the Russian government as a criminal enterprise wielding all the power of a sovereign state illuminates his personal transformation from financier to human rights activist, campaigning for justice for his late lawyer and friend.

With fraud, bribery, corruption, and torture exposed at every turn, Red Notice is a shocking but true political roller-coaster that plays out in the highest echelons of Western power.

When we landed around 10:00pm PST, we ordered Lyft again (as Uber was charging $150) and were finally home at around 10:45pm.
