A Day out in Monterey & Carmel

On Sunday morning, Inn and I decided to visit Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea. After packing our Tesla Model Y, Inna started the 80-minute drive to Monterey along Highway 101.

Traffic was reasonably light, and we arrived in Monterey right on time, stopping for coffee at Captain + Stoker Cafe. There were excellent tennis courts nearby with people playing. I should have brought my tennis gear!

After looking at the menu, we ordered the following items:

  • Boris: Poured Coffee, Blueberry Waffle
  • Inna: Cappuccino, Avocado Toast

The coffee poured at Captain + Stoker was delicious, and the waffle was excellent. After our quick breakfast, we continued our drive to Pacific Grove, where we parked our car and walked about 5 miles along the shore.

We found excellent places for renting stand-up paddleboards and kayaks and will return to kayaking and SUP in the calm waters of Monterey Bay.

After our long walk, we stopped by for lunch at the Red House Cafe. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the entrees and fast service. After exploring the menu, we ordered the following:

  • Boris: Smoked Salmon on a Potato Pancake
  • Inna: Crab Cake Benedict

We really enjoyed our lunch and plan to dine here again! I am usually not an aficionado of potato pancakes, but this was fabulous.

We decided to drive to nearby Camel to spend the rest of our time on the beach. Sitting and relaxing under the sun, enjoying the warm weather, was lovely. Strolling on the beach, we found a few jellyfish, which we did not expect.

We decided to try Stationaery in Camel for dinner, but it was closed (even though Inna made dinner reservations). Inna and I also tried La Bicyclette, which was booked until 6:30pm.

Instead, we decided to drive back to Monterey and dine at Passionfish. We ordered the following items:

  • Appetizer: Mixed Green Salad, Fish Stew
  • Boris: Biscuit, Lamb Breast
  • Inna: Biscuit, Scallops, Hot Tea
  • Dessert: Truffle Torte

The Fish Stew was spicy but delicious, and the freshly baked biscuit was excellent. I liked the lamb breast and the scallops, too.
